For the second consecutive game, Manny Machado hit a solo home run – his 17th of the season and the fourth in his last eight games. In addition, three PadresXander Bogaerts, Jackson Merrill and Jose Iglesias – all scored in the second inning. After a scoreless opening inning, the Padres and Phillies both got on the board in the second. Philadelphia’s Nick Castellanos homered on a fly ball to center for a 1-0 lead, but after that, the Phillies had to play catch up for the remainder of the night. The Padres’ big inning started with a Jose Iglesias double on a line drive to right that allowed Bogaerts to score from third base. Then, Elias Díaz grounded out and Merrill, who was on third, scored. Fernando Tatis Jr. closed it out with a single on a line drive to center, which allowed Iglesias to make it home. The Phillies came back to score a run in the third inning, via a Kyle Schwarber solo homer to right center, making the score 3-2. It stayed that way until Machado’s solo homer in the eighth. The Padres used a total of six pitchers in the game, including Adrian Morejon, who earlier in the day was named to the National League All-Star team as the replacement for Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler. He had given up two runs, three hits and walked two during his time on the mound. Reliever Yuki Matsui came in for the remainder of the inning and promptly walked Schwarber to load the bases, bringing up Bryce Harper. But the slugger missed the opportunity and grounded out to first baseman Luis Arraez to end the inning. San Diego then turned to reliever Jeremiah Estrada for one scoreless inning before Morejon took the mound in the seventh. After another scoreless inning, Jason Adam came in for Morejon in the eighth and held Philadelphia in check. After Bergert’s departure, the Padre ‘pen prevented Philly from scoring after the third inning and held the opponent to five hits total. Closer Robert Suarez, who pitched the ninth inning, earned his MLB-leading 28th save of the season. With Friday’s victory, San Diego now sits at 51-43 and Philly falls to 54-40. The teams face off again at 4:35 p.m. Saturday and 1:10 p.m. Sunday at Petco Park before the All-Star break begins. Notes: Morejon, 26, will be participating in his first All-Star Game in his seventh MLB season. He’s the fifth Padre named to the 2025 All-Star team, marking the second straight year the Friars have sent five players to the game. Machado, Tatis, Suarez and Adam will join Morejon in Atlanta … Right-handed pitcher Michael King, who’s been on the 60-day injured list since May 22 with a throwing shoulder/long thoracic nerve injury, threw 25 pitches on Thursday during his first formal bullpen session since the injury. Manager Mike Shildt said that King is pain free, but the team has not yet targeted a date for his return to game action.
