😢 Goodbye Georgetown Rec Club

Tuesday transitions Sept. 2 — Welcome to September, Silver Streak readers! This week’s newsletter spotlights Sally Bethea’s Above the Waterline column; scroll down for more on the Refugee Women’s Network and their commitment to outdoors and wellness education programs. We also have details on the permanent closing of the 50-year-old Georgetown Recreation Club in Dunwoody. Plus, we look into the “Mind the Gap” report via GPB, which studies the effects of dementia diagnoses and quality of life.  And now for a few headlines: The western bus loop entrance to the Decatur MARTA station will be closed from today until Friday as renovations to the public plaza above move forward. The Sandy Springs City Council will hear an appeal tonight for a special event permit requested by Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School for the temporary lighting of a football field for its homecoming game.  Brookhaven’s third annual International Festival on Oct. 18-19 will take place at a new location this year – Lenox Park. The Brookhaven City Council approved funding for the North Druid Hills multi-use path at its first meeting held at the new City Centre complex.    Both the Decatur Book Festival and the Book Festival of the MJCCA announced their lineups for the upcoming fall events.   ICYMI, after 157 years in print, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution announced that it will transition to a digital-only model on Jan. 1. Rough Draft’s Keith Pepper shares his thoughts on the transition in a Publisher’s Note. Here’s what’s in today’s newsletter. • Goodbye GRC• Above the Waterline: Finding refuge outside• Dementia diagnoses and quality of lifeAND• Stories of Atlanta | Lance Russell Enjoy! Photo by Cathy Cobbs Georgetown Recreation Club closing permanently because of utility pole relocation for express lanes  Members of the Georgetown Recreation Club, like many people in the Metro Atlanta region, gathered over the Labor Day weekend to celebrate the end of the summer season. However, there will be no more “next year” for Georgetown – which is closing permanently in early September – because of a utility pole relocation for an as yet-to-be funded project and surprise sale of a key piece of land on the property. The pool, located at the end of Old Spring House Lane abutting I-285, has about 130 households on its membership roster. GRC was informed via email on May 13 by the Cowart family, which owns the property, that land along the edge of the site was sold to Georgia Power for an easement in anticipation of the I-285 Top End Express Lane Project. An air of resignation pervaded Georgetown’s final party of its existence on Aug. 30, with lots of reminiscing and talk about plans to move memberships to pools outside the neighborhood. Several people, according to attendees, are contemplating leaving the neighborhood altogether because of fears about what will happen to the soon-to-be-vacant property.  Read more on this story here. Photo by Temple Moore  Finding refuge and healing outside ABOVE THE WATERLINE | BY SALLY BETHEA  For decades, refugees have moved to Atlanta for a better life. The UN Refugee Agency says that Georgia “regularly ranks as one of the top ten most welcoming states in America, resettling about 2,500-3,500 refugees each year.” For 25 years, Refugee Women’s Network (RWN) has been the only nonprofit in Georgia specifically serving women. Through the organization’s popular outdoors and wellness educational programs, women can build confidence, make friends, develop new skills, and find ways to heal in nature. ➳ Read more about RWN’s story here.  Photo courtesy of George King Dementia diagnoses are widening the gap between the quantity and quality of life VIA AROUND THE STATE GPB The growing number of dementia diagnoses is contributing to the gap between longevity and quality of life. That’s according to a new report from the Milken Institute. The “Mind the Gap” report is a nod to the role of brain health and detection of early dementia, which plays an important part in years lived in good health and total years lived.People are living longer, but those with dementia experience a worsening quality of life. That means the sooner diseases like Alzheimer’s are detected, the better.  Read more in this story from GPB. ‘It started at Oglethorpe’: Stories of Atlanta by Lance Russell VIA SAPORTAREPORT  This week’s Stories of Atlanta begins in the spring of 1932, as the Great Depression tightened its grip on the country. New York’s governor had come to Atlanta to speak to the graduating class of Oglethorpe University. What he gave them wasn’t just a commencement address, it was a call to courage – a speech that named names, challenged assumptions, and laid out a startlingly bold vision for what America might become. The words he spoke that day traveled far beyond Georgia, impacting not just the graduates, but the very concept of presidential power.  Learn more in this week’s Stories of Atlanta.  Explore more of our newsletters Did you know Silver Streak has other newsletters that go deeper into what’s happening across metro Atlanta?  Stacks: Our newest newsletter covering Atlanta’s literary scene, author profiles, book reviews, and more comes out the second Sunday of each month.  Sketchbook: All about Atlanta’s art scene.
