Downtown San Diego potholes: See how long it takes to fix them

We’ve talked here before about “pothole season.” Now, we show you exactly what that looks like. Through automated data-gathering at Times of San Diego, we’re taking a look at the city’s pothole repair requests: where they happen, when they happen and how long they take to get fixed. Every week, requests for pothole repairs stream in to San Diego’s “Get It Done” service system. (You might have even made a request yourself, by phone or through the city’s app.) This map shows you what that data looks like in real-life. Just press the “Play” button at the bottom. Having trouble seeing the map on mobile? Try opening it here. This map shows the downtown area, but you can zoom out to see the whole city, and zoom in to see each report in detail. (Press pause to freeze it and explore.) The timeline shows the 12-month period from July 2024 to June 2025. A dot appears on the day a pothole gets reported … and disappears the day it is reported as fixed. As you’ll see from the timeline — and from the increasing number of dots — reports get a lot heavier in the spring. We’ve color-coded the dots by timeframe. A large number of reports get closed in a single day. But a few linger for weeks or months. The darker the dot, the longer it took. A few caveats about the map data: As of the beginning of July, a few potholes reported last year are still not showing as fixed. That’s why there are still dots at the end of the timeline. These dots show where people reported a pothole, not the actual existence of a pothole. So it’s possible multiple reports are about the same issue. And it’s possible some of these reports are in error. The data starts with potholes reported in June 2024 or later. There may have been potholes that got reported before that date but weren’t repaired until later. Those reports won’t show up on this map. When do most potholes happen in San Diego? You might call winter and spring “pothole season.” As a reminder, here’s an updated version of our chart on the last four years of pothole reports. !function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}(); Want to see every pothole in the city of San Diego?
